Temple makes a nice addition to any building, be it a house or an office. Having a temple in the building spreads a feeling of safety and purity throughout the space. You just feel a sense of security and protection with a temple around the corner. It is also supposed to bring in good luck to the people in the house or office.
Vastu Shastra strongly suggests the installation of a temple in the house to protect it from all kinds of negative energies. However, it also dictates a lot of other things apart from installing a temple. Merely having a temple in the house doesn’t do a lot of protection. There are a number of rules that need to be followed for the perfect execution of a proper Vastu plan.

Building a temple in the house, but at the wrong place does nothing for the family. In fact it can very well do the opposite of providing protection. Having it at the wrong place can attract evil spirits into the house, along with immense bad luck. Not only the position, but also the things to keep near the temple, the furniture setting, the aura in the room, all of that makes a different in Vastu Shastra.
Basically, a temple’s placement in the house has less to do with the worshipping and poojas, and more to do with its vibrations in relation to the rest of the house. If the vibrations are in sync with the house and with the occupants of the house, then that brings good luck, otherwise it doesn’t. So let’s have a look at a few Vastu tips for placing a temple or mandir in the house.
1 – The temple should be placed at a considerable height from the ground. It should be high enough so that when the idol or portrait of the god is placed on it, the base of the idol or portrait should be at the level of an adult’s chest. If its higher than that, it becomes harder for the devotee to see the idol’s face, and if it is lower than that level, then it becomes disrespectful towards the god to be placed at such a low level compared to the devotee.
2 – The god’s idol or portrait that is placed in the temple should be of a particular size. Generally the acceptable size in Vastu Shastra is 10 inches. An idol bigger than that is considered to be highly inauspicious. Similarly, if it is smaller than 9 inches, the vibrations of the idol don’t seem to coincide with that of the temple as perfectly as they should. So one should keep in mind the height of the idol while installing the temple.
3 – The need of some sort of an insulation while praying or performing a pooja in front of the temple is a very important point in Vastu Shastra. It actually has a scientific backing as well, which says that when we stand or sit on some kind of a mat or rug, out body head is stored in the insulation and keeps the negative energies at bay.

4 – In Vastu Shastra, it is considered holy to have the temple made of wood. Wood is a very important element in Vastu, and having the temple made of it attracts all kinds of good luck to the house. Apart from that, installing a temple made of marble was also acceptable, since white marble signified purity and clarity, which is what people needed their mind to be while praying to the gods.
5 – When lighting candles or diyas in the temple, it should be kept in mind to place them in the southeastern side of the temple. The southeastern side is generally supposed to be very auspicious side of the house, attracting in money and happiness. Lighting a fire in that side of the temple will light up the path for them into the house.

6 – One should keep in mind to install the temple in the northeastern or eastern part of the house. Both these corners present good luck in Vastu Shastra, and hence are suitable places for a temple. Also the northeastern side of the house generally tends to have extremely positive energies stored, unless there is a bathroom or kitchen in that side, so it works out best for the temple.
7 – Finally, one should definitely never place the picture of a departed one in the temple. It is considered to be a blatant disrespect of the gods to keep them on the same pedestal, and hence should be avoided at all costs.
