Our home is one of the most essential part of our lifestyle. More importantly a prosperous and happy home is what we work hard to achieve. What we do not realize is that the discord or disharmony in our house may not be directly our fault. It could be due to the negative energies that surround us. Hence while constructing or decorating our house if we keep the guidelines of Vaastu for home in our mind we can drive these negative energies away thereby maintaining peace and happiness.

A Vaastu home is one that has the principles of Vaastu Shastra incorporated in it. It channels the cosmic energy of the 5 elements of the universe into the house and removes all negativity.

1) We all understand the importance of good ventilation and abundance of space around the house. The aspect of air and space are an important part of Vaastu principles. Therefore it suggests that there should be enough open space in the house and around the building to facilitate uninterrupted ventilation of air throughout the house and the building.

2) A water body placed in the north east direction of your house can prove to be very lucky. Thus, you can either construct a well or a swimming pool outside in the north east corner of your house or place an earthen bowl with water and flower petals inside the house.

3) The Door of the house indicates all that you welcome inside. Hence according to Vaastu they should be placed north or east to channel positive energy into your home. There must not be any doors in the south west portion of the house. Another very essential point that must be kept in mind is that the doors should always open inside and not outside. If they open outside they will drive the positive energy away instead of inviting it.

4) The kitchen should be in the southeast or northwest corner of the house. The person cooking should be facing east or north. The heat generating appliances such as gas should be placed in the southeast portion.

5) According to Vaastu there should not be any mirrors in the bedroom, to avoid discord or disharmony among family. However, if you do have a dressing table with a mirror then keep it covered when you go to sleep for peace of mind.

6) Before the construction of the house begins there are three main aspects that must be considered.

- First, while laying the foundation you must begin from the east then move to the north then go the west and finally to south west.

- While filling the foundation the pouring of the concrete should begin from the south west, then move to the south, after that west, then east and finally north.

- The laying of the tiles should begin in the north, then go to the south. After that it should go from the east to the west.

7) When painting the walls of the house you must remember that the colours should be of lighter hues as they reflect peace, tranquillity, harmony etc. Dark colours are not advisable as they do not promote comfort or calm. In fact if you want to opt for concept walls keep in mind that the colour should not be more than two shades darker than the base tone.

8) Vastu suggests that the structure of the rooms of the house must square or rectangular in shape and not oval or circle. A square or rectangular shape denotes safety and stability.

9) Keeping prickly plants or artificial flowers in the house must be avoided since they attract negative energies. It is better if you keep fresh flowers or use wind chimes since their sound breaks negative energy patterns. The idea is to keep unpleasant or unattractive sounds or things away.

10) For an ideal children’s room keep the following things in mind:

- First and foremost, the best direction for your child’s room is west but southwest must be completely avoided.

- The door of the room should not be facing the bed directly. It can be placed in the south west corner so that your child can sleep with head towards the east or the south direction.

- There should not any sort of mirror placed opposite of the bed to avoid nightmares or troubled sleep.

- The furniture must not stick to the wall otherwise it obstructs the flow of positive energy.

- His/her study table should be places such that he/she faces east or northeast or north. Doing so will enhance their concentration.
