The pattern in which the Tarot Cards from a tarot deck are laid for the purpose of tarot reading is called a tarot spread. It is very important to select the correct spread in order to get the most accurate readings. The most commonly used tarot layouts or spreads are mentioned below.
Yes-or-No Tarot
This kind of spread is basically restricted to two answers, a “yes” or a “no” and thus is not appreciated by most tarot readers. An eight card “yes or no” spread is a variation of this classic spread and can produce a clearer and more concrete advice or reading.
Basic Three Card Spread
This is the simplest or all spread and the easiest to read too. Hence is the best spread for beginners or amateur tarot readers and is ideal for finding solutions to simple questions. In this layout, three cards are spread horizontally and then counted starting from left to right. The first, second and third cards are believed to represent the past, present and future, respectively. The card depicting the past helps to identify the root cause of the problem or the issues that affect the situation in concern. The card symbolizing the present helps in pointing out and understanding the condition like it is at that very moment. Finally the card representing the future depicts the potential results or outcomes that are possible in tandem with the deeds of the questioner.
Five Card Spread
A slightly more elaborate and informative than the three card spread, this layout consists of five cards which are placed in the form of a cross. This is perfect for people desirous of knowing more about their current condition. This spread reveals more details about the problem and also indicates results that are possible if the questioner selects a particular course of action. In this cross of cards, the card placed in the centre represents the present condition. The card kept to the left of this centre card symbolizes the past which is still linked to the present situation. The card on the Right to the middle card indicates the future outcomes. The bottom card tells of the reasons which caused the current situation while the card on top shows the potential results that may occur if the questioner adheres to a particular course of action.

Horseshoe Spread
This is a spread with a seven card layout which resembles the shape of a horse shoe. Three cards are placed on any of the three sides surrounding a centre card and this spread moves from left towards right. The 1st card symbolizes the past, 2nd card depicts the present, 3rd card indicates the hidden influences or elements affecting the question while the 4th card symbolizes the querent themselves. The 5th card depicts the external surrounding of the querent and the attitude of people in the surrounding while the 6th card represents the course of action that is right for the querent. Finally the 7th card represents the outcome.
Celtic Cross Spread
The most famous and widely used spread, a Celtic cross spread uses a circle with a line layout and 10 cards. This spread has been modified in many ways by different tarot readers and thus multiple layouts of this spread exist.
In the classic form of this complex spread, a card, Card 1, is placed vertically in the centre of the spread and is symbolic of the present. Card 2 is placed horizontally on top of card 1 to form the shape of a cross. This second card represents the immediate challenges faced by the querent. Card 3 is positioned above while Card 4 is placed below card 1. Card 3 represents the best potential outcomes while card 4 depicts the distant past and brings to light the root cause of the current situation. Card 5 and card 6 are placed on the right and left of Card 1 respectively and represent the immediate past and immediate future, respectively.
Cards 7 to cards 10 are placed i n a line, with 7 at the bottom and 10 on top, on one side of the prior arrangement. Card 7 depicts the querent’s currents inner feelings and how they affect the situation in question. Card 8 depicts the external surroundings relating to the question of the querent and includes their near and dear ones. Card 9 signifies the fears and hopes of the querent in relation to the question while finally Card 10 represents the outcome of the question.
Astrological Spreads
Similar to a clock, 12 cards are placed around a circle, with each card occupying the place of a number. This tarot spread uses these cards to depict the next 12 months for the querent with the current month being represented by the 1st card of the spread. Sometimes a 13th card can be placed in the centre of the circle to determine the overall tone of the entire year.
