What is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shatra is the ancient hindu science of architecture. It deals with the correct location and designing of residential and official properties. Right from selecting the plot, to construction of the building to accurate placement to items in the house or office, vastu deals with them all.
Vastu also applies to selection and placements of plants, trees and flowers in the house. It believes that plants play a crucial part in creating a positive environment at home and bringing positive energy into our daily lives. Some dos and don’t while planting and placing trees, flowers etc at home are given below:
Large and tall trees
Dos:
Big trees are believed to bring prosperity, stability and happiness in the house. Neem, mango, coconut, sandal wood and banana trees are not only extremely useful trees but are also considered highly auspicious These are long lasting trees and hold high medicinal value and believed to bring happiness, prosperity and wealth and thus should be definitely grown at home. Fruit bearing tress should always be grown in the eastern direction of the house. Basil plant or Tulsi is considered to be the most auspicious and powerful plant as per vastu. It should always be situated in the north – east, north and east sides of the house. It can be grown in the front or the backside of the house.
Don’ts:
Large and tall trees should always be grown at a distance from the house, preferably in the west and south area of the building. This is to avoid them from blocking the sunlight and damaging the foundation of the house with their large roots. Large trees should never be grown in the middle of the house. Milky trees like banyan and peepal should not be grown in the premise of the house as it is believed to inversely affect the health of the family members residing in the house. However, in case they are present on the property, they should always be located near sacred places or temples and should never be located in front of the entrance of the home. Tamarind, cotton and gum plants should never be planted or grown in the house. Leafless, dried and dead plants and tress symbolise negativity and thus should never be kept in the house and uprooted as soon as possible.

Dos:
Small trees and decorative plants should be grown and flower pots should be placed in the north and east side of the house, but never in the north- east corner of the property. Flowering plants should be grown in the south-west area of the house. Jasmine, Mogra, Marigold, rose and Champa are flowers that are good for the home as they create positive energy in the house. Money plant is believed to bring good luck and should always be planted inside the home. It is good to grow creepers near the entrance door of the house or in the garden. Aromatic flowering plants like jasmine and lotus should always be grown in the compound of the home and are extremely beneficial for the house.
Don’ts:
Barring rose, no thorny plants or shrubs should be planted on the property as thorny plants are believed to bring negativity into the house. Creepers should never be planted on the compound walls of the home. Dwarf plants or bonzais are believed to create quarrels and fights in the house and harm the owner of the house and their children. Thus these plants should never be planted on the property.
Rock garden and water bodies
Rock gardens and water bodies should always be built in the south-west part of the house and never on the north-east side of the property. To reap the benefits of the sunlight, swimming pools at home should always be located in the north or north-east direction.
